The History of the Personalized Pen

From Ancient Times To Modern Pen

The exact time of the first appearance of an instrument that resembles the pen is disputed among scholars. Some believe the pen was first used by ancient Indian civilizations. They would have used pens largely made from bird feathers and bamboo sticks. Ancient Egyptians are also thought to have developed some kind of pen. They developed a pen made form reeds for writing on papyrus scrolls. Reed pens remained popular for an extremely long amount of time being used right up to the middle ages.Constitution of the United States in 1787.

The Quill Pen

It was surpassed by the quill pen that was invented when the need for keeping a written record of things became necessary for everyday affairs of the people. The quill pen was used to write the original Constitution of the United States in 1787.

The Metal Point Pen

The metal point pen or nib pen is the type which you must dip into ink every few words. It did not contain an inbuilt reservoir of ink. This pen was very popular during the 17th and 18th century as it was cheap to manufacture and provided a better performance than the quill pen. These pens were originally made with copper nibs but after the steep nibbed pen was invented due to its lasting performance and cheap manufacturing cost it proved hugely popular.

The Fountain Pen

The first modern fountain pen was appeared in the 1950′s. Petrache Poenaru a Romanian student in Paris invented the first fountain pen, shortly after the French government patented his original design. It was not until later in the 1800′s that the mass produced fountain pen came into existence and took over from the metal nibbed pen.

The huge advantage to the fountain pen was that it contained its own internal reservoir of ink, was portable, refillable and by the standards of the day quite robust and performed well. The fountain pen remained the most used pen up until the first quarter of the 1900′s when it was proceeded by the ballpoint pen.

The BallPoint Pen

The first ballpoint pen was invented by László Bíró, László was a newspaper editor and wanted to use a pen with similar ink to that used in printing newspaper.

The advantage to this kind of ink is hat it dries almost instantly as it is applied to paper. How he accomplished this was he used a small steel ball bearing in the point of the pen.

As the pen was drawn across the paper the ball rotated and a small amount of ink covered the balls surface, the ink then transferred from the ball onto the paper.

Numerous different patents appeared soon after this invention and the modern pen was finally brought into the hands of anyone and everyone. These pens were incredibly cheap to manufacture and had a claimed two year life cycle.

The Personalized Pen

The personalized pen has existed almost as long as the first pens made their debut. One of their first adopters where royalty and people with high positions in society. Often they would commission custom pens to designed and built solely for their own use.

For example the Queen of Denmark has her own pen that is not available to buy anywhere in the world. People who wish to buy this personalized pen as a collectors item must receive permission from the royal family itself. Normally though only the royal family and member of the court can own one of these pens.

These days it is normal for any business of a modest size to have not only their own personalized pens but a whole range of stationary from desk calendars to customized pencils.

The reasons for this are multiple, it helps to build brand recognition, it serves as free advertising, and it can be a reminder to clients of your brand.
